Why are there three endurance drivers sharing one car?
In Formula 1, NASCAR, or IndyCar, a single driver competes from start to finish. But in endurance racing, it's common to see two or three drivers rotating through the same car over the course of a race.
The answer is simple.
No single driver can safely or consistently race at the limit for 24 straight hours.
Endurance racing isn't just about building the fastest car—it's about managing both the machine and the people inside it.

The Physical Challenge
Driving a race car for hours at a time is far more demanding than it looks.

How Driver Rotations Work
Most major endurance races, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Rolex 24 at Daytona, and the CrowdStrike 24 Hours of Spa, allow teams to enter three drivers per car.
Each driver completes several stints, with a stint lasting as long as the car can run on a tank of fuel and a set of tires. During a pit stop, the team may refuel the car, change tires, and swap drivers—all in a matter of seconds.
Over the course of a 24-hour race, each driver will usually spend several hours behind the wheel, often driving in completely different conditions.

One stint may take place in bright sunshine.
The next might be in darkness or heavy rain.
Why Three Drivers Instead of Two?
While shorter endurance races sometimes feature only two drivers, 24-hour events almost always require three.
With only two drivers, each would need to spend roughly 12 hours in the car—not including breaks between stints.
That level of physical and mental demand is simply too great for modern professional racing.
Adding a third driver allows teams to better manage fatigue while ensuring each driver remains fresh enough to perform at a high level.
It also gives teams more flexibility if changing weather, incidents, or strategy require adjustments during the race.

One of the most unique aspects of endurance racing is that victory belongs to an entire crew—not just one driver.

Mechanics execute flawless pit stops.
Spotters and strategists monitor the race.
And three drivers must work together to keep the car competitive for hours on end.
