2026 WEC 6 Hours of Fuji Preview: Predictions, Championship Stakes & What to Watch
Alpine owns the front row, Toyota and BMW have work to do, and the 2026 WEC championship fight could look very different six hours from now.

2026 WEC 6 Hours of Fuji
The FIA World Endurance Championship returns tonight for the 2026 6 Hours of Fuji, and the sixth round of the season arrives with both the Hypercar and LMGT3 championships very much alive.
Fuji has already delivered drama before the race has even started. Heavy rain forced WEC to cancel qualifying and Hyperpole on Saturday, meaning the starting grid was determined by each car's fastest time across the three practice sessions.
The race begins Sunday at 11:00 AM local time in Japan — 10:00 PM ET Saturday night — and with uncertain weather, several championship contenders starting deep in the field, and just two rounds remaining afterward, Fuji could become one of the most important races of the 2026 season. (FIAWEC)
Alpine Has a Real Opportunity
The biggest story heading into the race is Alpine.
The #36 Alpine of Victor Martins and Jules Gounon starts from pole, with the #35 of Charles Milesi and Ferdinand Habsburg alongside. More importantly, Alpine hasn't simply inherited track position: the A424 has shown genuine pace throughout the weekend. Martins topped FP2, Alpine was again fastest in the wet FP3, and the team says its long-run pace has also been strong. (FIAWEC)
There's history here too. Alpine won at Fuji in 2025 and scored its first A424 podium at the circuit in 2024. (Daily Sports Car)
First Sector prediction: The #36 Alpine is our pick for the overall victory. Six hours is a long time, but starting up front with proven pace in both dry and wet conditions gives Alpine a significant opportunity to control the opening phase.
Don't overlook the #35 either. An Alpine double-podium is very much in play if both cars stay clean.
Toyota's Championship Race Starts From Behind
Toyota arrives at its home circuit leading the Manufacturers' Championship with 140 points, only nine ahead of BMW on 131. Ferrari remains within striking distance at 114. (FIAWEC)
The Drivers' Championship is even closer.
BMW's René Rast and Robin Frijns are tied at 75 points with Toyota's Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Nyck de Vries. The #8 Toyota crew of Brendon Hartley, Ryō Hirakawa and Sébastien Buemi isn't far behind on 64. (FIAWEC)
But the grid has thrown everything open.
The #8 Toyota starts eighth, while the championship-leading #7 starts 13th. BMW has an even bigger recovery ahead, with the #15 starting 14th and the championship-leading #20 all the way down in 17th. Ferrari's factory cars start 11th and 16th. (RacingNews365)
That makes the championship battle one of the biggest reasons to watch tonight.
If Toyota can turn its starting position into a strong points haul while BMW struggles to recover, it could create valuable breathing room before the final two races. Conversely, a BMW recovery combined with trouble for Toyota could completely change the championship picture.
And Toyota certainly can't be dismissed at Fuji: it has won nine of the 12 previous WEC races at the circuit, although its most recent Fuji victory came in 2023. (FIA)
The Wild Cards: Genesis, Aston Martin and Cadillac
This might be where Fuji gets especially interesting.
Genesis starts third and fifth, by far one of the strongest grid positions of its debut WEC campaign. Aston Martin's Valkyries start fourth and sixth after the #007 received a two-place grid penalty, while Cadillac's #38 starts seventh. (FIAWEC)
None carries the same championship pressure as Toyota, BMW or Ferrari.
That could make them dangerous.
While the championship leaders work their way through traffic and potentially prioritize points, these teams can focus more aggressively on the race victory.
First Sector dark horse: Keep an eye on Genesis. A first WEC victory would still be a major upset, but starting both cars inside the top five gives the newcomer its best opportunity yet to become a genuine factor at the front.
LMGT3 Could Be Just as Important
The LMGT3 championship has its own fight brewing.
The #33 TF Sport Corvette leads the teams' standings with 76 points, followed by the #21 VISTA AF Corse Ferrari on 54 and the #92 Manthey Porsche on 49. (FIAWEC)
But none starts at the front.
Instead, the #77 Proton Competition Ford Mustang starts from LMGT3 pole, followed by the #79 Iron Lynx Mercedes-AMG, #78 Lexus and #58 McLaren. Championship rivals #21 Ferrari and #33 Corvette start ninth and tenth in class, while the two Manthey Porsches are at the back. (FIAWEC)
That's a massive opportunity for the Corvette championship leaders to protect their advantage — but also an opportunity for the chasing teams to pull themselves back into contention.
First Sector LMGT3 pick: #77 Ford Mustang.
The Mustang has looked strong throughout the weekend and earned its front-row position through practice pace rather than luck alone. Turning that into six hours of clean racing is another challenge, but this may be Ford's best opportunity yet for a breakthrough result at Fuji. (FIAWEC)
Weather Could Change Everything
Saturday demonstrated exactly how quickly Fuji can change.
Heavy rain and standing water became severe enough that qualifying was abandoned, and forecasts for Sunday still leave some possibility of rain around the region. (Weather Underground)
Even if the race begins dry, teams will have Saturday's wet running fresh in their minds.
A changing track could turn this from a straightforward six-hour strategy race into a battle over when to change tires, when to gamble on conditions and how much risk championship contenders are willing to accept.
At Fuji, one mistimed decision can erase hours of work.
First Sector Race Predictions
Overall Winner: #36 Alpine
Podium threat: #35 Alpine
Dark Horse: Genesis
Championship team to watch: #7 Toyota
LMGT3 Winner: #77 Proton Competition Ford Mustang
Biggest storyline: Toyota vs. BMW from deep in the field
Fuji has a habit of refusing to follow the script. No pole-sitter in either 2024 or 2025 went on to finish on the podium, and last year's class winners all started outside the first three rows. (FIA)
This year, with Alpine controlling the front row, Genesis near the front, Toyota and Ferrari buried in the midfield and BMW's championship-leading #20 starting last among the Hypercars, the ingredients are already there for another unpredictable six hours.
Green flag: 10:00 PM ET tonight.
Six hours. Two classes. Three races remaining entering Fuji. And almost no margin for error.
